Toyota announces Safety Sense autobraking on its Aygo and Yaris lines

Toyota has announced that its Safety Sense system is now an option on its smallest vehicles.

The Aygo and Yaris are two of Toyota's smallest models, and they now come available with an optional safety kit which includes automatic braking and lane departure warnings.

The features are part of a safety line Toyota's calling "Safety Sense." It includes laser-controlled pre-collision systems that can warn the driver of an imminent collision, all the while priming the brakes to deliver the best performance possible as soon as the pedal is hit.

On the off-chance a driver ignores or fails to hear the warning, Safety Sense's autonomous emergency braking system takes over, reducing the speed of the vehicle by 19 miles per hour, and, if need be, bringing the car to a complete stop.

The forward collision warning system works at any speed between 10 and 86 miles per hour, so long as the difference between the two cars is over 10 miles per hour. The autonomous braking functions at any speed between seven and 49 miles per hour.

Safety Sense is available as an option for every new Aygo model except the base x-grade, and every Yaris model other than the Active grade. It'll cost $587 for the Aygo, ad $626 for the Yaris.
