Air brake and filtration supplier Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems has just announced a decision to move its headquarters from Elyria to Avon, along with 550 of its employees.
The new facility, assuming everything moves according the schedule, could open as early as 2017. Construction is set for a 60-acre plot on Chester Road, close to a new Menards home improvement store.
Avon's Mayor Bryan Jensen announced that though he was overjoyed that Bendix chose Avon as the location of its new headquarters, he also felt sympathy for the hole the company would leave for Elyria. Before the move, Bendix was one of Elyria's largest employers, and while Elyria Mayor Holly Brinda acknowledges the move will be a blow to the city, she fully expects the local community to rebound.
Joe McAleese, Bendix's chairman said in a news release for the announce that the company's new location will allow it "to continue drawing from the skilled workforce in Northeast Ohio that has contributed so importantly to our success. And the site in Avon will not only allow us to remain in Lorain County, but will accommodate the expanded, updated facility required to maintain -- and accelerate -- the rapid growth we've experienced, particularly over the past dozen years."
Until the new headquarters opens, Bendix will continue its operations from Elyria.
